NATIONAL SCIENCE CHAIR - ANRF

The National Science Chair (NSC) scheme, administered by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), aims to recognize and support eminent superannuated Indian scientists in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Medicine. In response to the rapid growth of India’s scientific landscape, the scheme facilitates continued contributions from senior scientists post-retirement by leveraging their vast experience and expertise. Implemented in two modes, Mode-1 (Scientific Excellence) supports actively researching superannuated scientists lacking formal institutional backing, while Mode-2 (Science Leadership) honors distinguished scientists recognized for sustained thought leadership, mentorship, and international impact. Each awardee receives a fellowship of ₹1.5 lakh per month, with annual research grants of ₹25 lakh (Mode-1) and ₹5 lakh (Mode-2), along with ₹1 lakh per annum as overhead to the host institution. Awards are tenable for three years and may be extended by two additional years based on performance, with a cap of 30 awards under Mode-1 and 5 under Mode-2. Eligible nominees must be resident Indian scientists with outstanding research records and recognition from national or international scientific bodies, and must not hold administrative positions or receive honorarium/salary from any other source. Nominations are invited through select senior scientific leadership, and the final selection is made by the National Science Chair Advisory Committee (NSCAC). Applications are submitted via the ANRF online portal, including a 5-page research proposal for Mode-1. The NSC scheme promotes excellence in Indian R&D by enabling accomplished scientists to continue contributing meaningfully to national and global scientific advancement.
