HFSP Research Grants Award year 2026

The International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) strives to strengthen open scientific inquiry by initiating international collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cutting-edge basic research in the life sciences. The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) develops and implements the Program. The aim of the Program is to promote, through international cooperation, basic research focused on the elucidation of the sophisticated and complex mechanisms of living systems, for the benefit of all humankind. It aims to complement, not duplicate, the frontier life science programs of the countries that financially support HFSPO.
HFSPO attaches highest importance to novelty, scientific merit, internationality, and interdisciplinarity. Research topics may include biological functions at all levels of analysis, for example: studies on genes and individual molecules, intracellular networks, intercellular associations in tissues and organs, and networks underlying the complex functions of entire organisms including cognitive functions, as well as populations or ecosystems.

Small Immediate Need Grants

IGSTC supports 2+2 Projects involving industry, academia and research partners, Indo-German Joint Workshops and Industrial Fellowships targeted to young researchers in India to get exposure at German industrial set up in Germany. These are major programmes and grants are disbursed after due procedures and processes with a specific time frame.

The German and Indian “Engineering, Academic & Research” (EAR) community is large and exceeds half a million in numbers. However, our existing programme lines are defined and do not offer the possibility to provide quick assistance to kick off ad-hoc opportunities. There are several other modes & initiatives which require minor funding that the EAR community could utilize to formulate and collaborate for enhancing Indo-German S&T collaboration.
IGSTC can support such initiatives for quick turnaround decisions to address this gap. Through this initiative, support will be given for a proposal that requires modest funding and has the potential to embark on good bilateral Indo-German collaboration.

International Travel Scheme (ITS)

International Travel Support (ITS) Scheme provides financial assistance to Indian researchers for presenting a research paper in an international scientific event (conference, seminar, workshop etc.) held abroad. In addition, support is also provided to young scientists (age limit below 35 years as on date of start of the event) for attending training programmes, Short-term schools and Workshops. The maximum duration for training programs, schools, and workshops is limited to 21 days. Economy class air-fare by shortest route, airport-tax and visa fees are provided under the scheme. Registration fee as per actual or Rs. 50,000/- whichever is less will be provided to young scientist (Age< 35 on the date of start of event) in addition to the above support. Applications can be submitted within the window of 60-90 days in advance from the date of start of the event. The system will not accept early or late submission of applications. However, applicant who has already submitted a proposal will not be eligible to apply again within next 90 days from the date of submission of the first application.

Financial Assistance to Professional Bodies and Seminar/Symposia

Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) extends partial financial support, on selective basis, for organising such events (National as well as International). Academic institutions, research laboratories, professional bodies and other non-profit organisations, engaged in promoting scientific research, are eligible for financial support under the scheme. The support is primarily given to encourage participation of young scientists and research professionals in such events along with nominal support for pre-operative expenses like announcements brouchers etc.
The primary focus of the scheme is to support events having strong orientation towards scientific research in the areas of basic sciences, engineering, technology, agriculture & medicines. Events dealing with social science, management and those purely concerned with policy matters are generally not encouraged but may be considered as an exceptional case if there is a strong interface with mainstream areas of support. The scientific/technical contents of the events, thematic relevance, contextual impact and extent & level of participation are key components for deciding the support worthiness and quantum of support for individual events.

Mission for Advancement in High-impact Areas (MAHA) : EV-Mission

"The objective of the EV-Mission is to promote research & development of Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption in India, fostering an ecosystem that enables self-reliance and global competitiveness. This involves research & development in some of the key EV components such as batteries, motors and controllers, power electronics, and related subsystems, chargers, grid interface to meet our current technological requirements on one side as well as doing cutting edge futuristic research to attain future global leadership, enhance domestic R&D capabilities, and position India as a hub for development of EV components thereby promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and aligning with the goals of Viksit Bharat. The relevant approach is required to bridge the current gaps through targeted research with an aim of indigenisation, and value chain self-sufficiency as well as aiming global leadership by working on areas which have not yet succeeded elsewhere globally".

Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR): Phase-I

The National Education Policy 2020 has envisioned the establishment of ANRF with an overarching goal to enable a culture of research to permeate through universities and to undertake major initiatives to seed and grow research at state universities and other academic institutions where research capability is currently limited. As a first step towards fostering research across a broader range of institutions, a new program Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR) has been initiated. The motivation is to go beyond empowering researchers of institutions through individual-centric research grants, to a more holistic approach of uplifting the research culture and excellence of the entire institution in a systematic manner.

PAIR Program has been designed to boost the research capability of those institutions where research is at a nascent stage but which have the potential to perform well, in a mentorship mode by pairing them with well-established top-tier research institutions in a hub and spoke framework. The proposed hub and spoke model is a powerful tool to efficiently accelerate the progress of institutions as it works on a pull-and-push approach. While the hub pulls together the available potential and skills of the spokes for the envisioned research activities, they concurrently push scientific advancement and excellence back into the spokes enabling them to rapidly progress. The program is thus expected to not only bridge the gap between institutions but also serve as a catalyst for transformative research.
