The DBT-BIRAC Joint Call for Proposals under the BioE3 Policy invites submissions focused on the biomanufacturing of bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using indigenous or freedom-to-operate microbial production strains. Aimed at reducing dependency on fossil-based manufacturing and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, the initiative supports the development and scale-up of sustainable, environmentally friendly biomanufacturing technologies. Proposals may target specified bio-based products—such as biosurfactants, pigments, bioplastics, and antibiotics—using six identified production strains (e.g., E. coli SSY05, Saccharomyces cerevisiae NGY10) or other qualified strains with demonstrated proof-of-concept (TRL ≥3). Funding will be provided under two categories: Discovery & Application-Oriented Integrated Network Research (TRL 3–5, up to 100L scale) and Bridging the Gap for Scale-up (TRL 7+, above 100L scale). Eligible applicants include academic institutions, start-ups, and industry entities with Indian ownership, who must provide detailed justification for strain selection, TRL documentation, scalability, sustainability analysis, and commercialization potential. Production strains and associated toolkits must be deposited at the BioE3 Strain Resource Centre, iBRIC-NCCS Pune.
